Concussion Management

With heightened awareness of the prevalence and the impact of head injuries, there is support for evidence-based programs for managing these injuries and determining a safe schedule for returning athletes to sports.

ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is the first, most-widely used, and most scientifically validated computerized concussion evaluation system.  Developed in the early 1990’s, ImPACT is a 20-minute computer test that has become a standard tool used in comprehensive clinical management of concussions for athletes of all ages.

It is certainly an understatement to say that concussions in sport are getting lots of attention these days!  Due to the increasingly violent nature of sports like hockey, lacrosse, football, rugby, etc., the number of these head injuries is on the rise and the age of the injured athletes is alarmingly getting younger and younger.

For years, the sports medicine community has been well positioned to professionally manage a wide array of musculoskeletal injuries.  There are lots of scientific, best-practice treatment and rehabilitation protocols available to us when managing such common ailments as knee, shoulder, or back injuries.  Unfortunately, the same amount of reliable science does not exist in the case of sport concussions.  However, we now have some tools at our disposal to help us better manage our athletes when they suffer the consequences of a head injury, like ImPACT TESTING.

In its most effective form, the ImPACT test is administered to an athlete in their healthy, uninjured state – say, at the beginning of a season.  Then, if the athlete has the misfortune of suffering a head injury throughout the season, the ImPACT test is re-administered and the results of the two tests are compared.  The resultant objective performance scores of the two tests are compared, giving us an objective measure of how the athlete’s cognitive abilities have been affected by the head injury.

ImPACT testing protocol available to our community.  Our certified athletic therapists (who are the staff athletic therapists for the Guelph Storm Hockey Club) and our Sports Medicine Physician (who is a Team Physician with the Guelph Storm and University of Guelph Hockey Program), we have abundant knowledge and experience with this protocol.  Simply contact us and we will guide you through the process!
